The beaches we'd send our friends to — quiet coves and empty sand where you can still hear the palms more than the jet skis.
Phuket has no shortage of beaches, but the ones on every postcard aren't the ones we'd send our friends to. After two decades exploring every cove on the island, these are the quiet corners we keep coming back to.
1. Ao Sane
Tucked behind the Nai Harn headland, Ao Sane is a series of tiny bouldered coves reachable only by a narrow track. Snorkeling here is some of the best on the island, with calm water and healthy coral just offshore. Bring your own mask.
2. Laem Ka
On the southeast coast, Laem Ka faces the sunrise — making it one of the few Phuket beaches that's magical in the morning rather than the evening. Shallow, warm, and sheltered, it's perfect for families who want calm water without the crowds.
3. Yanui
A pocket-sized beach between Nai Harn and Promthep Cape, Yanui has a laid-back, almost hippie charm. Rent a kayak, paddle around the headland, and you might have a private lagoon all to yourself.
4. Ao Yon
On the east coast near Cape Panwa, Ao Yon is where locals come to swim. No beach clubs, no sun loungers for rent — just shade, sand, and quiet.
5. Banana Beach
North of Naithon, Banana Beach is a 200-metre sliver of sand hidden below the coastal road. The walk down is steep but short, and the reward is water so clear you'll check your phone is still in your pocket.
A local tip: these beaches have few facilities — pack water, snacks, and a towel, and please take your rubbish with you. The quiet is worth protecting. Want a guide to show you the best of them in a single day? Our Phuket Hidden Gems tour hits three in one relaxed itinerary.
