A little knowledge goes a long way. What to wear, how to sit, and what never to do when visiting Phuket's Buddhist temples.
Phuket is home to nearly 30 Buddhist temples, and visiting one is among the most meaningful things you can do on the island — if you do it respectfully. A little knowledge goes a long way. Here's what to know before you enter.
Dress the Part
This is the rule that catches the most visitors out. Shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone, regardless of gender. That means no singlets, shorts, or skirts above the knee. A sarong wrapped over shorts is the easiest fix, and many temples lend wraps at the entrance — but don't count on it.
Remove Your Shoes
Before entering any temple building, take off your shoes. There's usually a rack or a pile by the door; if in doubt, follow the locals.
Keep Your Head Low
In Thai culture, the head is sacred and the feet are the lowest part of the body. Never touch anyone's head, and crucially, never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk. When sitting, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Quiet and Phones Off
Temples are places of worship, not photo studios. Speak softly, silence your phone, and don't pose playfully with Buddha images. A respectful photo from a distance is fine; a selfie mimicking the Buddha is deeply offensive.
Women and Monks
Monks are not permitted to touch or be touched by women, or to receive something directly from a woman's hand. If a woman wants to make an offering, she places it on a cloth or table. This isn't personal — it's a strict monastic rule.
